Looking after your jewellery

Elunara Care

Diamonds are hard to scratch, but the metal around them and the settings that hold them need a little care. A few simple habits will keep your Elunara piece as bright as the day it arrived.

Everyday wear

Put your jewellery on last, after creams, perfume and hairspray, and take it off first at the end of the day.

  • Take rings off for the gym, gardening, cleaning or moving heavy things — a knock in the wrong place can bend a prong.
  • Remove your pieces before swimming: chlorine and salt water are hard on gold and can dull silver.
  • Keep household cleaners, bleach and nail-polish remover away from your jewellery.

Cleaning at home

A diamond that looks cloudy is usually just covered by a thin film of lotion or skin oil. To bring the light back:

  • soak the piece for a few minutes in warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid;
  • brush gently around the stone and under the setting with a soft, clean toothbrush;
  • rinse in clean water — with the sink plugged — and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Avoid toothpaste, baking soda and other abrasives, which scratch metal.

Coloured gemstones

Sapphires and rubies are almost as durable as diamonds. Softer stones — such as emerald, tanzanite, morganite, aquamarine, peridot and amethyst — are best cleaned only with lukewarm soapy water and a soft cloth. Keep them away from ultrasonic cleaners, steam and sudden changes of temperature, and out of strong sunlight for long periods.

Caring for the metal

  • Platinum develops a soft, satin patina with wear. Many people love it; if you prefer a high shine, it can be polished again.
  • White gold is plated with rhodium for its bright white colour. Over time the plating wears and a warmer tone may show through — re-plating restores it.
  • Yellow and rose gold keep their colour; a polishing cloth brings back the shine.
  • Silver can darken when it meets air and moisture. Wear it often, store it in a closed pouch, and use a silver polishing cloth to lift any tarnish.

Storing your pieces

Diamonds can scratch other jewellery — and each other — so keep each piece in its own soft pouch or a lined compartment. Fasten necklaces and bracelets before you put them away so the chains do not tangle, and keep everything somewhere dry.

Checking the setting

Every few weeks, hold your piece up to the light and look at the claws or prongs. If a stone moves or clicks when you tap it gently, if a prong looks bent or flattened, or if anything catches on your clothes, stop wearing the piece and contact us before the stone is lost.
